Whether or not you are looking for hand painted art or customized signs, we have you covered.
The name DVus was born in 2018 as a random thought while driving to Grand Isle, LA for the weekend. DVus stands for D (Delatte, co-owner Shannon’s last name) + V (Valence, co-owner Jared’s last name) = us; D+V=us.
Orginally, DVus was a symbolic name to represent Shannon & Jared as a power couple and would be the future name of a camp and boat they dreamed of having one day. Therefore, when they started this company, DVus was the best name choice for it.
Shannon, artist/creator, has always loved arts and crafts. Other than art in high school, she has not had any special art training. She began painting on canvas in 2017 when she moved into her family home as the 3rd generation owning it. During that move, she wanted a change from the store bought decor she had and decided to decorate with her own art. That was when she rediscovered her passion for the arts. As time went on & after requests, she began to sell some of her work which expanded from canvas to oyster/crab shells and wood.
Jared, wood specialist, learned his skills from growing up watching his pawpaw doing woodwork in the garage. It was Jared’s idea to combine both of their skills sets and work together as a team In 2019.
DVus: D (Delatte) + V (Valence) = US
More About us:
I’m a self-taught artist and owner of DVus Llc, born and raised in New Orleans (Westbank), registered nurse, and mother to 2 young adult men (Ryan & Paul Delatte) & my fur babies, Chewy (Dog-Pomeranian) and Storm (cat we rescued as a 2wk old orphan during hurricane Isaac).
I've always loved art growing up and took art in High school (Ursuline Academy, NOLA) but haven't done much up until a few years ago when I rediscovered my passion for it. I had moved into my old family home (3rd generation) and started painting on canvas to decorate my walls. I found painting very therapeutic and fell in love with it all over again even more so when I see my art making people smile.
I love meeting new people, making them smile, and listening to their stories and/or ideas. I don’t think I’ve ever had a shy bone in my body and have always been able to have whole conversations with complete strangers with ease. I’m a huge fan of collaborating and learning from other artists whether it’s simple tips, new techniques, advise, or just sharing stories. I do a lot with a variety of mediums, techniques/styles, materials, and other misc crafts. I’ve come to realize that I’m a very project oriented idealist and along the way I discovered that my niche is painted wood pieces and shellfish.
I prefer doing commission pieces because they have special values to my client, however I do enjoy doing other pieces and those always have a story or meaning behind them that inspired me.
How do you know when your work is complete? (when to stop painting)
That's a hard one for me sometimes, but I usually have to stop and sit back from a distance and just look at it and not touch it. If by the next day I see some things that I think it needs, I'll add it then. Then I'll sit back to admire it again and that's when I decide it's complete. (Sometimes I'll send pictures of it to my parents & brother for their thoughts, and of course they always love it, before deciding I'm done.)
My dream is for DVus to successfully grow becoming a legacy that will be handed down generations to come and add; a storefront with a variety of merchandise, including work from other local artists; a studio to work and have group project events; and a gallery to display featured art.
I was born and raised in New Orleans, FedEx driver, and father to Alyssa & Jackson Valence! Shannon and I met in 2015 via mutual friends on Facebook, met in person for the 1st time 6/17/17 at Artie’s in Grand Isle and became even better friends, then we finally started dating 09/29/18.
I learned my carpentry skills while growing up watching my Pawpaw doing woodwork in the garage. Honestly, I can't draw a straight line, lol. I was inspired to create art when I started dating Shannon. She's the real artist! It was sorta my idea to combine our skills and make art as a team.
How do you know when your work is complete? (when to stop)
I just follow Shannon’s orders and leave that part to her, the artist! Ha
My dream is that I not only want us to be successful and thrive, but dream of us 2 doing it together working for ourselves so we can have more time with family and travel.
